Customer Research Overview

Interviews: Sunshine Labs has conducted 74 interviews with entrepreneurs, game developers, and potential contributors to projects, which provided evidence for our thesis that 1) the difficulty of forming appropriate formal relationships between collaborators is a meaningful obstacle to starting businesses, and 2) that many skilled professionals are interested in contributing to early-stage, high-risk projects.

Surveys: Survey results support our assumptions. More than 50% of entrepreneur respondents said that “reading legal documents” and “deciding whether and how much equity to give” caused them significant anxiety (4 or greater on a 1-5 scale). More than 80% of contributor respondents said they would contribute to interesting projects in their free time, even if they may never receive payment.

Risks & Threats

  1. Complexity in aligning with local laws and regulations

Sunshine Labs is streamlining the process of starting a company by delaying and in some cases replacing the registration of a legal business entity. Doing so has legal and tax implications in the areas of financial securities, business liability, banking. We will have to address these challenges in the interest of our customers. Our competent advisors (see The Team below) believe we can offer our services in the US, the UK, and Germany without running afoul of any laws or regulations, but we expect to continuously manage new challenges as we develop the product.

  2. Slow development of the technological ecosystem

Part of the ecosystem on which Sunshine Labs depends is still young and we expect some difficulty combining the constituent technologies into a product that is easy to use. This is particularly true in the area of blockchain. We can mitigate this risk by temporarily using traditional (non-blockchain) infrastructure in certain applications. There are strong indicators, however, that the ecosystem is maturing sufficiently quickly.

  3. Competition

A number of companies are approaching this space in different ways, but all are very young and none are similar enough to Cooperativ to cause concern at this stage. colony.io, fairmint.co, and usestir.com are examples of businesses that may overlap more with Sunshine Labs’ as they develop, but for now are not significant threats.
